EPIDURALS - PART 2 - WHEN IS TOO LATE TO GET ONE?

First time moms have a longer window for epidural placement than anyone who has already had a baby.

If you have delivered a baby before, your dilation typically moves faster than it did with your first.

With your first, it may take hours to get to four centimeters. Once you hit four, your labor begins to progress a bit faster, typically one centimeter per hour. With your second or third or beyond baby, it still make take hours to get to four, but once you reach four, your labor can move very quickly!! I have seen people sometimes progress from to 4 to 10 centimeters in 20 minutes. aline styled items to wear of the wedding

With your first, you may push for 1-2 hours, with your 2nd, it may only take you 10 minutes!

So if you are thinking about getting an epidural, it is important to time the placement of your epidural. You will want to be able to sit still through a contraction.

Basically it is too late to get an epidural if you can't sit still or if the baby is coming out!

2nd time moms sometimes miss their window because if they are 4 centimeters or more, their labor moves more quickly, so they have trouble sitting still or the baby is coming before we can even get it in. But it is rare for a first time mom to miss that window!

So depending on what number baby this is for you, you will want to be sure to get the epidural before things get too uncomfortable. You can also ask your nurse to advise you about when he or she thinks it is getting close to being too late!
